Global Impact

In 1992, the first international panel on hip arthroscopy was convened in Cambridge, UK from which Dr. Thomas Byrd emerged as one of few contemporary pioneers and world leaders in arthroscopic surgery of the hip. As medical literature on the topic began to flourish, hip arthroscopy lectures soon found their way onto the programs of national and international orthopaedic organizations.

Excited by the possibilities of new treatment options for their patients, and eager to learn, surgeons from across the globe sought out the experts and many have come to Nashville to learn the techniques developed by Dr. Byrd. Supported in part by educational grants from industry leader Smith & Nephew Endoscopy, many of these surgeons have found themselves in the unique position of being the first to introduce these techniques to their colleagues at home and educational symposiums focusing on hip arthroscopy have been developed as a result. NSMF has provided resources in support of lectures and surgical demonstrations at many of these programs in countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, Cuba, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Portugal, South Korea, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland and Turkey.

Nashville Sports Medicine Foundation's presence on the international stage is well-evidenced by publications in medical textbooks in China, Germany and Italy, as well as numerous American medical journals and textbooks that are distributed globally.
